A Deep Dive into Space Innovation
Lonsdale, South Australia – On 29 October, REDARC Defence & Space, in partnership with FACCI French-Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Neumann Space, hosted the Australia’s Space Future Conference. This event brought together industry leaders, innovators, and enthusiasts to explore the cutting edge of space technology.
Over 60 participants had the opportunity to hear from representatives of FACCI, REDARC Group and Neumann Space.
Anthony Kittel (CEO, REDARC Group) and Romain Bertin (FACCI SA Node Vice President) presented company overviews, while Andy Warr (Chief Director of Engineering, Neumann Space) and Fabien Claudon (Risk and Compliance Manager, REDARC Electronics) shared insights into the companies’ contributions to the space industry.
With the increasing number of satellites launched into orbit – over 1.6 million to date – the need for sustainable space practices has become paramount. One critical challenge is the decommissioning of satellites, which often involves de-orbiting them to prevent space debris.
Neumann Space, a specialist electric propulsion systems supplier, is at the forefront of addressing this challenge. Their innovative Neumann Drive offers a simple, reliable, and efficient solution for satellite propulsion. The drive includes a solid metallic propellant, which is sparked by an electrical charge turning the metal into plasma, creating thrust. The system has a high fuel efficiency value and a high density.
A key focus of the conference was the collaboration between Neumann Space and REDARC Defence & Space. The two companies joined forces to address a critical question: What is the electromagnetic (EM) profile of a CubeSat propulsion systems?
To answer this question, a team of experts from Neumann Space, CNES (French Space Agency), and REDARC Defence & Space worked together to develop and conduct rigorous testing. The REDARC facility provided the ideal environment for these tests with its state-of-the-art EMC chamber and vibration testing capabilities.
Through the collaborative effort, Neumann Space and REDARC Defence & Space have made significant strides in advancing space technology. By sharing knowledge and resources, they have paved the way for more sustainable and efficient satellite missions.
